Diplomas were presented to 60 seniors at Grove High School's 47th annual commencement. A
group discussion included Frank Mason, Larry McGehee, Patricia Muzzall, Gaynelle McClain,
Gayle Guthrie, Dorothy Jean Owen, Ramelle Grace and Peggy Odom. Robert Covington was
valedictorian and Nancy Matthews salutatorian. (All listed are Seniors, Class of 1954.)
The eighth-grade class of 115 members at Atkins-Porter School was entertained with a party
at the city auditorum. Mrs. L.F. Wahl was chairman, assisted by Mmes. W.H. Carter,
Winifred Lee, Aaron Brown and Jack Hamilton.

About 45 students were enrolled for summer school at Atkins-Porter. Tutition would be $24
for the full summer's curriculum. Teachers would be Mrs. J.Q. Adams, Perry Alexander and
Grace French Hatler.

Pupils of the Osage School presented a one-act play. " Not Quite Perfect." The
cast included Ethel Rose Rushing, Linda Lemonds, Betty Sue Clark, Joel Clark, Darrell
Lemonds, Janice Wade, Mary Ruth Hill and Jerry Clark.

A play, " I Love Lucy," was presented by Grove High School students under the direction of Ruby Krider. Lead roles were played by Allen "Bubba" Myrick as Ricky Arnaz and Helen Kibbons ('56) as Lucy. Others in the cast were Joseph Nairon ('56), Jimmy Williams ('55), Jane Burke ('56), Nancy Adams ('56), Bobby Glover ('57) and Leon Ridgeway ('57).

Robert Covington ('54) was named Valedictorian of the Grove High School Class of 1954. He
had a four-year average of 96.75. Nancy Matthews ('54) was Salutatorian with an average of
95.87. The class consisted of 64 seniors.

For the first time in school history, the two top graduates at Grove High School were
boys. Paul Crosswy was Valedictorian and Malcolm Pierce Salutatorian from a group of 54
graduates. In previous years, girls had taken most top honors.

Bobby Glenn Scott was named Valedictorian of the graduating class at Henry High School. He had a four year average of 93.67. Salutatorian was Ruby Lee Crosser with an average of 93.49.

Grove Boulevard was being beautified by students of the school. Boys were busy with shovels and hoes planning a solid border of blue irises along both sides of the walk to the school and all around the building. They were working under the bossmanship of agriculture teacher Charles Pardue. Pearl Routon had donated all of the iris roots. The Delphian Society had initiated the project.

Principal Julian Brewer announced names of honor students at Cottage Grove High School. Valedictorian of the graduating class would be Wynelle Hart, with a four-year average of 96.06. Salutatorian was Alice Barrett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Barrett, with an average of 95.34. The class consisted of 13 graduates.

Emmett Pritchett, a vocational agriculture student of Charles Pardue at Grove High School,
made a profit of $333 on his sweet potato crop. Pardue and Pritchett followed sound rules
of fertilizing, planting in new soil and treating plants before setting out with corrosive
bichloride of mercury to prevent black rot.

The annual Grove High School Ye Olde Ministerial was ready for a two-night performance at
the city auditorium. Robert Covington ('54) would be the interlocutor. End men included
Frank Mason ('54), Larry McGehee ('54), James Turner, Dan Bundy ('55), Gerald Hill ('55),
Dan Brown ('54), Warren Brown ('54) and Charles Franklin ('55). End women were Nancy
Norman ('54), Donna Veazey ('54), Barbara Brown ('55), Nancy Ledsinger, Becky McClain
('56) and Ruth Futrell ('56).

in McKenzie. The event was under the direction of Ruby Cloys Krider, expression teacher at
Grove.

team would be Albert Snow. Among veterans returning to the squad were Neil Andrews, Ted

Joy Norwood ('55), sponsored by the Pleasant Hill community club, was the first entrant in

A trio of Paris beauties were among a large cast practicing for the annual "Ye Olde Tyme Minstrel," presented by the Grove High School students under direction of Clem and Ruby Krider. In the vocal trio were Jean Caldwell ('54), Linda Adams ('56) and Sue Beth Crews ('54).

Professor C. U. Matthews, principal of E.W. Grove Henry County High School for six years, resigned to accept a position as schools superintendent in Newnan, Georgia. He said he only accepted the post because it was a larger field and he could return to the state of his nativity.

The Grove Blue Devilettes whipped Trezevant, 46-43, to take the District 28 basketball
trophy at the Grove gym. Patsy Mustain ('54) scored 22 points for the winners. In the
boy's contest, Trezevant beat Grove 67-48. Gordon Taylor of Trezevant dropped in 30 points
to bring his season total to 970, a new state record, surpasing Humboldt's Doug Atkins
with 944 in 1949.

An annual Grove High School inter-class contest was won by a senior and a junior. All four
classes were represented in the specach competition. Senior winner was Nelom Jackson
('30), son of Mr. and Mrs. John Jackson of India, and junior Elione McCutchan ('29),
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. McCutchan of Head Street, was the second winner. The event
was held at the Capitol Theater.

Grove High School classes were dismissed early to allow faculty and students to attend the
funeral of teacher Mary Lou Diggs, who had died at the age of 61. Born in the Palestine
community, she had taught at Grove since 1934. Survivors include two sisters, Sarah Diggs,
a teacher in Belle Grade, Florida, and Corinne Diggs, society editor of the
Post-Intelligencer.

A.D. (Dickie) Sensing ('50) was assigned to the USS Burton Island off the west coast with
headquarters in San Diego. The ship would make two trips annually to the north pole.

Beta Rho chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority met and planned a benefit dance, with proceeds to go to the March of Dimes. Tom Lonardo and his orchestra would play for the event. Grove High School student Mickey Norman (‘57) entertained the club with a humorous rendition of "Man On A Raft."
Grove High School boys and girls took victories from Huntington in basketball. Leading scorers in the boys game was Bobby Underwood (‘54) and Patsy Mustain (‘54) led the girls.

Dan King ('50) of Paris appeared on Slick Welch's sports program on WSM television in
Nashville. King had been a star athlete at Grove High School in Paris before enrolling to
play basketball at Western Kentucky State College. He and a teammate appeared on the
program with Ed Diddle, who had been basketball coach at Western 31 years. Western was
undefeated for the season, coming off a victory over Vanderbilt.
Billy Joe McNutt ('48), son of Mr. and Mrs. T. L. McNutt, Sr., received a bachelor
of science in pharmacy degree from the University of Tennessee Medical Units in Memphis.
He had received pre-medical training at Murray State College and was married to the former
Mary Ann Coursey ('51).

Jeannene Marcus scored 18 points to lead Grove High School Devilette basketball team over
Trezevant, 47-43. Nancy Matthews was right behind with 16 points and Patsy Mustain had 13.
Outstanding at guard were Peggy Odom, Winnie Prince and Peggy Bomar. ( All the named
players were in the Grove Class of 1954)

Funeral services were held at McEvoy Funeral Home for Paris attorney John Kennon, who had
been killed in an automobile accident north of Camden. The 1928 Grove High School graduate
had practiced law here with Charles G. Neese.

Ernest Williams ('49) joined The Post-Intelligencer staff after a stint in the army. The
son of P-I Publisher Percy Williams, he had done duty as a linotype operator at Governor's
Island, New York and in Japan while in the army.

Tom C. Mayo ('50), son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mayo of Paris, received one of the highest
honors awarded at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Mayo and 10 others were named
Torchbearers. Criteria to enter the exclusive group included scholarship and campus
activities. Mayo, a senior, was vice president of Omicron Delta Kappa national honorary
leadership fraternity.

Grove High School speech students practically swept the field in a speech tournament at
Springfield, taking eight first places and one second. Particating were David Brown (54),

Nancy Norman (54), Calvin Crouch ('56) and Albert Myrick.

Two carloads of Grove football players and rooters were involved in an accident while
returning from the Greenfield game. Near Milan, the lead car driven by A. W. Jackson, had
stopped to remove mud from the headlights when the second car, a Chrysler maching driven
by Ralph Timmons, struck it in the rear, bursting the gas tank and burning both cars. A
few people were slightly burned, but most only had singed hair. One car was burned up.

A number of Parisians were attending a state parents-teachers meeting in Memphis.
Prominent among them were Mrs. C.W. McGeehee, 8th district PTA chairman, and Mrs. Smith G.
Grable of Henry, state PTA vice president in charge of illiteracy.
Halloween gaiety prevailed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Nealon when they entertained
with a party in honor of Suzanne Carter, who was spending the wunter here to attend Grove
High School. An improvised graveyard marked the entrance to the home and spooky ghosts and
goblins peered from basement windows. Ghosts told stories and clanking chains and creaking
doors enhanced the milieu. Ginger cakes, popcorn balls and dixie cups were served.
