Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Minor had returned from spending a week with Dr. and Mrs. Tom Minor
('51) and Tom Jr. in Indiana Hills, Ind.
Three Grove High School football stars signed scholarships to play at Memphis State
University. Included were Bill Hudson ('58), Ronnie Guthrie ('58) and Mike Dinwiddie
('58).

Night classes for farmers were being conducted at Nobles and Shell Academy under
supervision of Prof. C.T. Pardue, vocational agriculture teacher at Grove High School.
A party at the country club for Grove football boys and their girlfriends was under
direction of Mmes. Brandon Neese and G.C. Swendling. The squad numbered 27, including
regulars and scrubs.

Two Grove High School basketball players were featured in a story by Ken Clayton ('32).
Bill Hudson ('58) and Judy Robison ('59) both were stellar students as well as star
players and both were members of the National Honor Society.
Longtime Paris attorney and County Judge Mont H. Goldston was dead at age 77. He had
served as direct representative to the Tennessee Legislature. He left two sons, Franklin
Goldston ('34) of Paris and Mont H. Goldston Jr. ('36) of Houston, Texas.
Ernest Williams ('49) was elected president of the Paris chapter of the National Council
of Presbyterian Men. Other officers were H.E. Snidow and Alex Szanyi.

Carlene Paschall ('55), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Paschall, became the bride of Dalton
Wheatley of Pontiac, Mich., Nov. 28. The wedding was solemnized at Oak Hill Union Church.
The couple would make their home in Pontiac.
A crowd of about 400 people attended a Christmas show in the Governor’s Room at the
Greystone. Flower arrangements by Joe Routon ('40) and Velma Rucker were on display.
Attracting much attention was the head of Christ portrait painted by Routon.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Williams ('52) and daughter, Cynthia of Tullahoma and Mr. and Mrs.
Bryant Williams ('32) of Columbia were in Paris visiting over the weekend.
The Paris Elks Lodge held an annual rabbit barbecue and initiation. New members of the
lodge were Virgil E. Baker Jr., Keith H. Roberts, C.G. Ross, Charles “Chick”
King ('50), Guy C. Walker, Baxter Perry, Glen Douglas, Kersey Blackwood, “Buck”
Abernathy, Hal Bomar, John Barnett ('35) and James Vincent Jr ('52).

Jackie Irion ('59), son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Irion Jr., won a $100 scholarship to Lambuth
College at a speaking contest at First Methodist Church. Judy Veazey ('59) spoke at the
contest on Methodism.
The Daily Oklahoman in Oklahoma City featured Paris native Buster Childs ('55) in a sports
page feature. Childs, a sophomore at Oklahoma State University, was a Grove High School
graduate and the son of Mr. and Mrs. V.L. Childs. He played guard for OSU’s football
team and had been a star player for Grove.

Thanksgiving morning featured a grand parade through downtown presented by the football
team of Grove High School in preparation for the afternoon clash with Murray High School
in the annual Turkey Day Classic. Monty Doran ('34) as drum major led the Paris School
Band and the “Queen of Football,” Helen Stovall ('33), was on a float with eight
attendants.

An annual Lions Club football banquet honored Bill Hudson ('58) of the Grove Blue Devils
as most valuable player for 1957. Hudson played tackle. Jack Nichols ('58) was named best
spirited player and Mike Dinwiddie best blocker.

County schools reopened after being closed for a week due to a flu epidemic. Some schools
had reported absenteesim as high as 50 percent.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Paris School Band of Grove High School was selected
for presentation of the “First Chair of America,” the national yearbook of
outstanding high school bands. In the brass section of the band were Tommy Berry ('59),
Terry Blackwood ('58), Jane Warmack ('59), Carol Wilkins ('59), Eddie Martin ('58), Jimmy
Cox ('58), Ray Harding ('59), Jerry Van Cleave (('58) and Billy Mustain ('59).
Bristol-Myers purchased Grove Laboratories Inc. of St. Louis, subject to approval by
stockholders, many of whom lived in Paris. Dr. E.W. Grove had founded the medicine company
before the turn of the 20th century, and Dr. Grove had endowed Grove High School.
Bristol-Myers said Grove products, including four-way cold tablets and Bromo-Quinine,
would continue to be manufactured.

Dr. Dwight M. “Mickey” Norman ('57) of East Wood Clinic was received as a
diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice as a result of passing a certification
exam offered by ABFP.

The Grove High School Blue Devils won their final regular game of the season over
Trezevant 32-6. Billy Ray Moseley ('59) once again ran wild with touchdown runs of 70, 42
and 10 yards. The team would appear against Newbern in the Cotton Bowl at Brownsville.
Seniors making their final regular game appearance were Milton James ('58), Charles Hill
('58), Joel Clark ('58), Larry Carter ('58), Wayne Kibbons ('58), Randal “Ears”
Scholes ('58), Mike Dinwiddie ('58), Bill Hudson, Jack Nichols ('58) and Ronnie Guthrie
('58).

Osage School held a Halloween carnival. Crawford Chambers was in charge of bingo and cake
walks, dart games, a fishing pond and fortune- telling were other activities.

A Paris boy had made a name for the Tennessee Vols footall team. Sonny Humphreys ('32), a
freshman at UT, played in a game with Sewanee and his splendid play was noted by all fans.
The game ended in a 0-0 tie.

The Grove Blue Devils pummeled a strong Union City 11, with young scatback Billy Ray
Moseley ('59) ( literally getting out of a sickbed to spark the Devils. Joel Clark ('58)
drew first blood with a touchdown five minutes into the game, then Moseley, who had been
in bed sick all week, took over and ran up the most yardage for Grove. Final score was
26-6.
Bill Hudson ('58) was elected president of the G-Club at Grove High School. Other officers
were Martha Porter, Ronnie Guthrie and Jan Nichols. The club was for athletes.

Angeline Thompson, Rosa Caldwell, Dorris Thompson, Eugene Rison ('21), Randolph Young

Fire chief George Atkins ('55) was pictured showing winning posters in a Fire
Prevention Week contest. Poster winners were Johnny Clayton, Todd Myers, Beth Farmer,
Tracy Beville, Kathy Shorb, Wesley Hanson, Michael Morton, Ross Reed, and Matt Hayes.

The Grove High School Tower Choir elected officers. President was Eddie Martin ('58) and
others were Martha Porter ('58), Maxine Maxwell ('59), Pat Gatlin ('58), Broeck Wahl
('58), Jack Nichols ('58) and Randall Scholes ('58).
Janice Hutson ('56) was selected secretary of Baptist Student Union at the University of
Tennessee at Martin. She was a sophomore majoring in home economics and the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Grady Hutson.

The Atkins-Porter Parent Teachers Association held its first meeting of the year in the
form of a shower. All attendees were asked to bring a soup bowl or dish towel for benefit
of the lunchroom. Mrs. Ira Seay was chairman of the event.

A six-room house with electric lights and running water near Grove School was advertised
for rent. Interested parties could call 127.

The youth Group, Teen Tavern, elected officers. President was Mike Dinwiddie ('58) and
others were Jack Nichols ('58), Jan Nichols ('58) and Don Berry ('60). Sponsors were Mr.
and Mrs. Clem Krider and Dr. and Mrs. L.D. Chesemore.
Chief of Police Lawrence King announced winners of a teen driving contest sponsored by the
Paris Business and Professional Women’s Club. King said drivers were observed for a
week before selections were made. Bill Hudson ('58) and Wanda Cole were winners. Hudson
received a gift certificate from Salant and Salant and Cole a gift certificate from Higgs
and Matthews Women’s Apparel.

Thirteen county schools were closed for cotton picking, in addition to seven closed
earlier. A short crop of cotton indicated the closure might be short. Schools on the
latest list were Antioch, Bunns, Cochrafl Grove, Clifty, Caledonia, Fairview, Mansfield,
Elkhorn, Manlyville, Pleasant Grove, Shell Academy, Spring Hill and Young.

Royalty had been chosen for the upcoming Grove High School homecoming. Jan Nichols ('58)
would be homecoming queen. Senior attendant was Norma Pierce ('58), junior attendant
Maxine Maxwell ('59), sophomore attendant Gerry Paschall ('60) and freshman attendant
Bonnie Beal ('61).

Season tickets for the Grove football schedule opened as the Blue Devils were approaching
the opener with Martin. Price was $1 for adults and 50 cents for students for all games
except the annual “Turkey Day” Thanksgiving clash with Murray.

School Athletic Association.

The Rev. and Mrs. Carlos Owens ('48) had arrived in Africa to begin their missionary
careers. A letter from the Owenses to Western District Baptist Association stated they
would be in Dar es Salaam, Tanganyika for several months to learn the language of the
area, then move into the bush country.

Several Paris boys and their agriculture teacher took part in a radio broadcast from
Jackson on the importance of farm production. Professor C.T. Pardue led the group. He was
vocational agriculture teacher at Grove High School. John Upchurch also was one of the

Louise Turner, Frances Rast, Ruth Frow and Earl Routon.

Robert Adams ('52) of Paris graduated with honors from the Gradwohl School of Labratory
Technique in St. Louis. He would be a laboratory
technician in Mayfield. Adams, a Grove High School graduate had been instrumental in
forming a student council at Grove and was its first president.
The senior class at Henry School elected officers. President was Jimmy Guinn and others
were Bobbie Buie, Polly Carter, Nancy
Walton, Glenda Lipps and Nancy Bowden.

The Grove Parent-Teacher Association was soliciting used text books for distribution to
students who could not afford to buy books.
A committee of Mmrs. Fred Morris, S.H. Jones and T. Joe Smith was making arrangements for
the collection.
Fall enrollment at Springville High School was reported up from 68 the previous year to
80. It was said two bus lines were responsible
for the increase. One of the lines brought students from the Highway 69 area and the other
ran from the old 23rd district via Antioch and
Elkhorn.

Announcement was made by the county school board that Arkley Wright of Henderson, Ky.,
would become the new principal at E.W. Grove Henry County High School. Wright would
succeed J.F. Zimmerman, who would teach in the English department at Vanderbilt
University. Wright had been head of Henderson schools three years and was a graduate of
Georgetown University.

The Grove High Blue Devils opened the 1957 season with a 21-0 victory over the McKenzie
Rebels. Halfback Joel Clark ('58) scored two touchdowns and Billy Moseley ('59) the other.
Grove was in charge all the way.

Grove High School opened the 1932 term the first week in September with a record
enrollment. Professor W.J. Smith said for the first time more than 500 students would be
enrolled. Two buses were bringing in students from outlying areas, increasing the
enrollment.

Paris Fire Chief George Atkins ('55) was elected president of the Tennessee chapter of the
International Association of Arson Investigators at a conference in Memphis.

August 22, 2007 Edition ~ 50 YEARS AGO
Ronald Kilgore ('60), son of Mrs. B.C. Kilgore, suffered a broken neck in a diving
accident at football camp on Kentucky Lake. Young Kilgore,
a 15-year-old junior at Grove High School and quarterback on the football squad, was doing
a "Dutchman's roll" and failed to surface after
the dive. He was rushed to to a Memphis hospital. Kilgore also was an outstanding baseball
pitcher in American Legion ball and was feared by
foes all over West Tennessee.
The body of William Barton Clark ('47) arrived on L&N Train No. 102. He had been
killed in an auto accident in Texas. Known to his friends
as "Bill," he was one of three brothers who aspired to be officers in the U.S.
Navy. He had been an outstanding football player at Grove High
School, as were his brothers Dan ('56) and Allen ('49). After funeral services here, he
would be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
