GROVE  HOMECOMING/REUNION  ARTICLE

By  Bill  Williams

60th anniversary reunion planned for Grove High students in Paris, TN

Spearheading a 60th anniversary reunion of his Grove High School Class of 1952 wasn’t enough for Don Laster.

Why not open the doors to all classes, the Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., resident reasoned.

“It seems that every time I came home I missed friends from our class or from other classes that had just been there or would be coming after I left,” Laster said.

So on June 30, the Class of ’52 is hosting a reunion for all alumni of Grove, which operated from 1906 to 1969.

A general “gabfest” gathering — no program and no meal — is planned from 1-5 p.m. that day in the Lee Academy for the Arts cafeteria.

There is no registration fee, but Laster is hoping those who expect to come will register on the Grove High School website, www.ewgrove.com.

The 1952 class is coordinating the general gathering as part of its own 60th anniversary reunion.

That class plans to gather for supper at 6 p.m. June 29 at Paris Landing State Park Inn.

“I just thought it would be neat if all classes were invited back that weekend,” Laster said.

“I’m sure anyone growing up in a small town feels the same way about their school, but Grove was special and Paris will always be home.”

The Grove High website so far lists 58 alumni from 13 different classes and 11 states who plan to attend.

Others wishing to come are encouraged to add their names to the website list, managed by James “Buddy” Dancy of Logansport, Ind.

Grove High School, in the Grove Tower building now occupied by offices of the Henry County Board of Education, closed when Henry County High School opened.

Its archives and other historical information are available on the Grove web site.

It was named for Edwin Wiley Grove, Paris entrepreneur who built a fortune on a patent medicine formula and became the county’s most generous philanthropist.

Among his acts of civic generosity was founding of a trust fund for operation of the school that bore his name.

The school was reputed to be the first privately endowed public high school in Tennessee history.

A similar reunion was conducted in Paris in 2006 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the school and the Tower building.
