| Long time Henry County Educator
James Ewing "Jim" Underwood,70, died early this morning, September 27, 1996, at his Franklin Drive residence in Paris. The body is to be cremated. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Dossie Wheatley of Dyersburg and Ben Boone, First United Methodist Church in Paris will officate. Visitation is planned from 5-8 p.m. today at McEvoy Funeral Home. A Puryear native, he was born July 10, 1926, to Hinda Lax Underwood and the late Walter G. Underwood. He was married March 20, 1948, to the former Charlie Jackson, who also survives. A Korean War veteran, he was principal of Rhea Elementary School from 1968 until his retirement in 1990. He also is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Mark Mattingly of Big Sandy; two sons and a daughter-in-law. Hugh and Amy Underwood of Dallas and James Douglas Underwood of Puryear and his fiancee, Nancy Lassiter; a sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Blaine McNabb of Murray; two brothers and sister-in-laws, Tilford and Joyce Underwood of Paducah, Kentucky, and Hal and Kay Underwood of Puryear; two grandchildren, David and Katie Mattingly; and a stepgranddaughter, Alyssa Meersmas; and Nancy Lassiter's daughter, |
