Henry County native Dr. Melvin Austin Humphreys, 79, died Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, at his home in Cordova. He was born June 29, 1936, in Paris and was reared in Cottage Grove. His parents are the late Melvin Brown and Virginia Austin Humphreys. A memorial service is planned at 4 p.m. today at the Buntyn Presbyterian Church in Memphis, where he was a long-time member and elder. Visitation will begin at 3. A private burial will follow at the Memphis Funeral Home’s Memorial Gardens. A professor emeritus of the University of Memphis following a tenure of 43 years, Humphreys also was a long-time outdoorsman and Boy Scout leader. He earned degrees from the University of Tennessee at Martin, Memphis State University and Indiana University. Survivors include his wife of 54 years: Kay Humphreys; two sons: Andrew (Terri) Humphreys and Mark (Elizabeth) Humphreys; And nine grandchildren: Austin, Cooper, Haley, Samuel, Margaret, William, Thomas, Harrison and Rebecca Humphreys.
