Ronald David "Gus" Guthrie

Ronald David “Gus” Guthrie, 76, went to be with the Lord
Thursday July 21, 2016 following a long-term illness.

Raised in Paris, Tennessee, the son of William Clarence
and Rosa (Green) Guthrie, Ron lived most of his life in
Knoxville where He was a longtime member of Cedar
Springs Presbyterian Church.

A strong athlete, Ron excelled in football and baseball,
leading him to attend college at University of Memphis
and then University of Tennessee, graduating with a
Bachelor’s and Master’s in Engineering.

He worked for 25 years for Tennessee Valley Authority,
before co-founding the consulting group EGS, which was
ultimately acquired by SAIC. In what was the pinnacle of
his career, he spent many recent years traveling to
Russia as a consultant for the US government to
dismantle nuclear facilities there. He was honored with
the Outstanding UT Alumnus Award in 2006 for this work
and his long, distinguished career.

A special thank you to the dedicated staff at
Shannondale Retirement Center for their thoughtful
care—in particular to Ron’s wife, Karen and nurse, Patsy
Harmon—as well as the skilled Health Care Center staff,
who cared for him in his final days. Also, special
thanks to Angie whose servant spirit has shown through
in her devoted care for her father.

Beloved husband to wife Karen (Miller) Guthrie and the
late Ann (Weaver) Guthrie; father to children, Angie
Podgorski (Mark), David Guthrie (Lydia), Shari Glickman
(Michael); and stepchildren, Melany Bunch (David),
Dustin Hansard (Cyndi), Beth Watts (Lucas), Robbie
Miller; grandfather to eight grandchildren and five
step-grandchildren; brother of Jerry Guthrie (Carole)
and Larry Guthrie (Becky); dear to mother-in-law, Evelyn
Fultz, and many nieces and nephews, close friends and
work associates.

The family will receive friends from 10-11:00 a.m.
Saturday July 23, 2016 at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage
Chapel, 6200 Kingston Pike with a celebration of Ron’s
life at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Ron with a donation to
either Cure PSP (www.psp.org) or the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation (www.cff.org). online condolences may be made
