Thank you so much for all the hard work in putting on the 100 year celebration of E.
W. Grove High School.
Dr. McGehee was so good and all the other participants were as well. I just wanted
to let you know that your

Just had an hour-long conversation with an 85-year-old graduate of the Class of 1939. She
is the daughter of William Haliburton Greer
and Happy Greer. She says her mother was the first teacher at Grove and that the Happy
Greer Delphian Club is named in her honor.
She is a good friend of Cara Trevathan of the Class of 1938, who lives in Columbia, SC,
and this lady is related to the Richard Dunlap
family. I think I understood the lady to say her married name is Jane Puckett. The contact
information she gave me is HERE if
anyone
remembers her and can contact her.

Best wishes for a wonderful weekend of memories. Larry, I already know yours will be
"The Blue Ribbon" speech. Glad those
oratory days for me competing against you are way back when! Sorry I can't be in
attendance. My "gracefulness" got in the
way leading to a very bad fall, a week's hospitalization, and now slowly I'm recovering.
Thanks for many great memories years ago.

The original tune for the Grove High School Alma Mater is called "Annie Lisle"
written by H.S. Thompson in circa 1858. The music
was later used for Cornell University's alma mater called "Far Above Cayuga's
Waters." Cornell claims to be the first institution to use
the tune of "Annie Lisle" for an alma mater. The music was used for alma maters
by other colleges, universities, and high schools across
the country, including Grove and Henry high schools.

Let's see if we can nail down an accurate history of the Grove High School Alma Mater. The
older version was in use by 1942
and continued at least through 1954. Does anyone know if this version was used earlier
than 1942 or later than 1955? Who
wrote the words to the earlier version? The most recent version (words by Lamar Roberts)
was in use by 1958 and continued
through 1969. When did the changeover occur? The so-called 1949 version may be the year
the older version was locally
scored--put in written form with the musical notes. The tune has been used for many years
by several high school and college
as their "alma maters" in the U.S.--including Cornell--but I don't know the
original composer nor the name of the hymn version.
Any information would be helpful as we want to include both versions and the dates on the
centennial program. Let's sing both
versions at the centennial dinner and see if we can get Lamar Roberts to lead us!

Apparently, old Alma Maters never die, they just fade away; only to arise again. The words
of "1949 version" appeared
verbatim in Towers of 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1946. And obviously later, as well.

The third Alma Mater (vintage 1949) is pretty much the one I recall for 1950-54. I recited
it from memory from the
press box at Barton Field while helping with WTPR remote radio coverage of some games,
probably around 1955.
